Why You Should Avoid Promoting Your Podcast on Social Media

In today's episode, I am going to remind you about the best way to promote your podcast on social media.
In today's episode, I am going to remind you about the best way to promote your podcast on social media.
To get the best results, you should be PARTICIPATION on social media instead of just straight promotion.
By the end of the episode, you'll know why that is and how you can work participation into your social media strategy.
This is Grow the Show and in this quick hit episode, I just want to provide a reminder to you as you promote your podcast on social media because as entrepreneurs, we have to be reminded more than we need to be taught. Shout out to Mosy Nation, Alex and Layla Hermosing. And so today I want to remind you that the best way to grow your podcast on social media and the best way to grow any social media presence is to not promote but to participate. So that is the message today. Don't promote participate. The number one thing that I see podcasters do on social media that actually hurts their attempt to get people to listen to their podcast is to promote too much to spam their podcast link in Facebook groups and other communities to simply post headshots of their guests and say new episode now link in bio and everything like that. Not doing that at all is better than doing it like you probably would be better served not making those posts at all because people are not on Instagram to see pictures of people that they don't know they're not there to see professional headshots of strangers. They're there to consume content that educates them entertains them or empowers them. And so if you really want your podcast to grow based on your social media presence, then I recommend that you start creating social media content that is actually valuable. That does one of those three things and that is somehow related to what your podcast talks about. So if you're on Instagram, you should make reels. If you're on TikTok, you should make TikTok videos. If you're on Twitter, you should make Twitter threads. And if you're on LinkedIn, you can make all kinds of different posts to go viral. And again, those posts need to be valuable in a vacuum where if somebody consumes that piece of social media that you have published and they never consume anything that you ever put out again, they will have enjoyed and gotten value from that piece of social media. And so if you're posting headshots of your guest, ask yourself, if somebody sees this post and they see nothing that I post ever again, what's their impression going to be of me? Is it going to be good? Will they have learned something or gotten value or laughed at or been entertained by this post? Odds are. No. And that's why your posts don't perform well because the algorithm is not this bugaboo thing that is out to get you. It is simply there. It's computer code that is meant to figure out what social media content actually makes people happy and then show that content to the most people possible. So the reason why the algorithm is crushing the stuff that you post is because nobody likes it. And so in order to fix that, make posts people like on the other side of that, you can't skip engagement on social media. Participating on social media is not just posting stuff all the time and never commenting or DMing anybody. And so that's why this is your reminder to do your 15 minutes of targeted daily engagement. Engaging online, answering questions, cracking jokes, celebrating people's wins and connecting, being social on social media, being the life of the party. 15 minutes of engagement beats 15 hours of content creation in my opinion every day. Come at me. So that's it for today, just a quick reminder, hop in in your ears to say on social media. Don't promote, participate, spend a quarter of the time you're spending promoting, actually participating and watch your social media audience and podcast audience start to grow. So if you disagree with me and invite you into the girl, the show Facebook group where we can do it out, just kidding, I always invite disagreement, always willing to change my opinion, but I very, very, very strongly believe in what I am saying via my experience growing two podcasts past six figures and downloads, past seven figures in revenue, and also helping 250 plus clients in the accelerator program and more than 15,000 podcasters via this podcast. And so that's it for this quick hit. Here's your reminder, don't promote, participate, and we'll see you in the next one.
